Who we are
Twenty years ago, the Texas Historical Commission designated Rio Grande City as a Main Street America City. Rio Grande City is one of four designated Main Street Programs in the Rio Grande Valley. We take pride in this level of distinction and the recognition it brings to our proud community.
The Main Street Program focuses on revitalization of the downtown historic district by implementing the Four Point© approach set by the National Main Street Center.

Early History of
Rio Grande City
The first half of the 19th century saw an influx of French and German refugees escaping the Mexican War of Independence of 1810. Many settled in the area that is now Rio Grande City and were influential on the architecture and development of the city.
Founded in 1848, Rio Grande City was patterned after Austin's layout with a main road leading to the courthouse and became an important part of river commerce. Despite the isolation and inadequate roadways, the Rio Grande River provided the growing community an active passenger and cargo ship trade with New Orleans and flourished as a cattle center.
